SNAP Benefit Changes

A recent federal law change authorized a temporary increase in NJ SNAP benefits for all households getting SNAP. From January 2021 to June 2021, all SNAP recipients will receive a 15% benefit increase.
These extra SNAP benefit amounts will be added as a supplement to your Families First card, in addition to your regular monthly amount.

Currently, everyone who gets SNAP will get the maximum amount for their household size, because of an earlier COVID-19 relief change. Households whose normal SNAP benefit is less than the maximum amount will get a supplement to make up the difference. The supplement that increases everyone to the maximum amount will continue as long as there is a federal and state public health emergency due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

If you are getting a SNAP supplement now, you may decide to save some of your SNAP benefits and not use them all right away, because the increase is temporary. You do not need to use all the SNAP benefits that you receive in the same month that you receive them. Your SNAP benefits do not expire at the end of each month. If your SNAP case is closed for some reason, or your SNAP monthly benefit amount is reduced, you still have the right to use any remaining benefits in your electronic benefits transfer (EBT) account before the case closed. The NJ Division of Family Development will remove benefits from your account if you haven’t used your Families First card for 365 consecutive days.

Check Food Stamps/SNAP for SNAP benefit updates. It’s possible that these extra benefits will continue beyond June 2021. If you have questions about SNAP or need further information or legal advice about SNAP, you can also contact the LSNJLAWSM Legal Hotline at 888-LSNJ-LAW.
