Medicaid Renewals: The Start Is in Sight

In March 2020, a federal COVID-19 public health emergency (PHE) was declared, and enrollees in Medicaid or CHIP could not be terminated as long as the PHE was in effect. The PHE will probably end at the beginning of next year.

When it ends, everyone on Medicaid or CHIP must complete renewals. NJ FamilyCare and the counties have been sending out renewal forms since July 1, 2021, so you may have already received one this year. However, you will be asked to do another renewal within the 12-month period after the PHE ends. You may receive the form less than a year from when you filled out your last renewal. It is very important to look for those forms in the mail, and complete and send them back as soon as possible whenever you receive them.

If your family has Medicaid or CHIP coverage, start preparing now to renew your coverage. NJ FamilyCare and your insurance company must have your current address, especially if you have moved since March 2020. Call the member services line for your insurance company (the number on the back of your insurance card) or NJ FamilyCare at (800) 701-0710 to check that your correct address is in the system.

If you have any questions about updating your information, or the notices that you are receiving related to your health insurance coverage, call the Health Care Access Project at 800-LSNJ-LAW.
