FAQ - Can my rent be increased during the pandemic?

Renters living in certain residential buildings financed by the New Jersey Housing and Mortgage Finance Agency were subject to a rent freeze through the expiration of Executive Order 103, the Public Health Emergency.  The Public Health Emergency ended June 4, 2021 . To see if your building was covered under the rent freeze during that time, check the list located at https://www.njhousing.gov/dca/hmfa/consumers/docs/MasterList-EligibleProperties_rentfreeze.pdf.

Some municipalities also may have suspended rent increases during the pandemic. You may want to call city hall to see if your municipality has passed an ordinance to freeze rent increases.
