Requesting Court Transcripts in an Appeal

 

A transcript is an official printed record of what happened in a court proceeding or in a hearing at an administrative agency (for example, the New Jersey Department of Education or the Office of Administrative Law). It is prepared by a court reporter, court clerk, or agency employee and is part of the official record of what was said by the judge or hearing officer, the parties and witnesses, and any other events that happened during the trial.

Normally, a complete transcript of the trial or hearing is one of the items required to appeal an unfavorable decision to a higher court. When you appeal a decision, you (the appellant) are required to pay for the cost of preparing this transcript. Unfortunately, at this time, there are no waivers for this expense.

Fees are set for a 5-year period, and a new period began on July 1, 2020. For a standard delivery transcript, the fee is now $4.68 per page for an original transcript and $0.78 per page for any additional copies. The complete transcript fee, which is in effect until July 1, 2025, is as follows:
