Illegal Lockout

If you are a tenant in New Jersey, it is illegal for your a landlord to lock you out of your apartment or room without a court order giving him or her the right to do so. The only way that the landlord can legally get you out of your apartment or room is to sue you for eviction in the Superior court and win. Even after the landlord wins in court, you cannot be evicted without the constable (an officer of the Superior court) present at the apartment. However, your rights may be different depending upon what type of dwelling or room you live in. Choose the statement below that best describes your situation.
