• Past residents have been from Morris, Essex, Passaic, and Sussex Counties. Program provides transitional home and shelter for homeless, pregnant girls and women. Limited to 9 residents at a time.
  
  
• Also provides Life Skills and Education Program, which is a “full curriculum of healthcare for self and baby, tools for living, and self-enrichment” focusing on “self-determination, self-sufficiency, and empowerment.”
  
  
• Referrals come from counseling services, DYFS, social welfare agencies, churches, and clinics.
  
  
• Referral Process: referring agency will arrange an interview and evaluation on behalf of the client. Once client has been accepted and admitted, there is a two-week trial period during which the client will decide whether Birth Haven is the right place for them.
  
  
• After the birth of the child, Birth Haven requests that client remain for at least 6 weeks, to provide continued guidance in childcare and parenting skills, as well as assistance with alternative housing.

• Program provides homeless, pregnant or parenting teens and their infants with safe, stable community base living arrangements in the 7 counties of Southern New Jersey, allowing teens to work towards high school diploma or GED.
  
  
• Targeting teenage mothers between the ages of 15-18.
  
  
• Program provides case management services, independent living skills training, education, family planning, counseling services, and referrals.
  
  
• Referrals accepted from Board of Social Services and Value Options in southern region of New Jersey.
  
  
• Once application is processed, youth will meet with Program Manager and Legal Guardian to determine if program is appropriate.
  
  
• Program is Medicaid eligible.
  
  
• Teen may stay in the program until the child’s 1st birthday.

• Transitional residence for women age 18-23 who are homeless and pregnant.
  
  
• All women are welcome regardless of age, race, creed, color, national origin, or economic status. They must be mentally and physically capable of taking care of themselves and to be drug and alcohol free.
  
  
• Residents are expected to attend school or work full time while residing in the program.
  
  
• Program provides on site case management, life skills training, parenting education, home economics, nutrition counseling, group counseling, mentoring program, welfare advocacy.
  
  
• Referrals for job training, job placement, legal assistance, medical assistance, continuing education/GED, social services.
  
  
• Residents may live in the program for 12 months and go on to receive support for 6 months to mothers who go to live independently in the community.
  
  
• There is an application and interview process before acceptance into the program.

• Covenant House of Atlantic City offers short-term, crisis housing for teens, less than 21 years of age.
  
  
• They have 3 beds available for any teen, under 21, and her children of any age.
  
  
• They have a 24 hour, 7 days a week open intake process at their drop-in Crisis Center.
  
  
• Other Covenant House programs include: Crisis Care, Medical Services, Mother/Child Program (Raphael’s Life House), Outreach, Pastoral Ministries, Rights of Passage, Substance Abuse Counseling, World of Work, and Youth Advocacy.

• UIH offers the New Empowerment Alternatives (NEA) program, a residential program to service pregnant and parenting teens. The program addresses critical issues facing teenage parents.
  
  
• NEA is home to as many as 12 pregnant and parenting adolescents and up to 14 of their children.
  
  
• The program is geared toward preparing teen mothers to return to their own families or equipping them to live independently. Program participants attend school or are actively involved in GED or vocational education. The NEA curriculum helps teen mothers develop household management skills and teaches them how to access community social services. Computer training is also available.
  
  
• In addition to the NEA, UIH offers several other programs, such as Mother and Child Program, Operation Fatherhood, The Father Center, and The Trenton Men’s Collaborative.
  
  
• Referral Process:
  
  • Applicant should be referred by DYFS.
  • UIH will schedule an interview with the DYFS, client, and her children once a referral packet is submitted. Application includes a full history and psychological/psychiatric evaluation of client (completed within the past 6 months).
  • Once interview is completed, applicant and children must have a complete physical (within 2 weeks of placement.)
  • If drug use/abuse is indicated in physical, the Division will be responsible for a drug and alcohol screening before decision on admission can be made.
  • Once all of the information is submitted, a determination will be made.

• Isaiah House offers a residential program called Teen MAP (Mothers Assistance Program) for pregnant teens between 14-19 years old who want to change their lives and give themselves the skills necessary to raise their children.
  
  
• Participants continue with their regular school and prenatal health program in which they are currently involved.
  
  
• A full-time case manager works with the teen on parenting education and life skills.
  
  
• Every pregnant teen in the program must follow a prenatal care schedule and learn meal planning and preparation. Parenting education is included, from baby development, health and nutrition, safety, etc.
  
• Referrals are made by the Division of Youth and Family Services (DYFS).
  
  
• Teen MAP accepts girls throughout the state of New Jersey as long as they have an open DYFS case.
  
  
• Teen MAP will provide services until no longer needed, such as the birth of child, family reunification, placement of mother and child, or age of maturity.
