Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP)

Introduction

  • LIHEAP provides subsidies to help low-income families and individuals pay for home heating costs or heating bills associated with rent. It also provides assistance with cooling costs if they are medically necessary. LIHEAP funds can be used for the payment of oil, natural gas, electric, propane, or kerosene heat. Households whose heating costs are included in their rent may also be eligible for these funds. You should be eligible for LIHEAP benefits if your household is responsible for home heating costs, either directly or included in the rent, and meets income eligibility requirements (up to 175% of the federal poverty guidelines). Contact the designated outreach site in your area to complete an application. Households eligible for LIHEAP may also be eligible for Lifeline Utility Assistance.
